Solar Radiation Damage <\/span> Prevention Program (PPDRS)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is invisible, cannot be felt, and can cause serious damage to the skin and eyes. In Peru, due to its proximity to the equator, the altitude of the highlands, and the thinning of the ozone layer, the UV radiation index reaches extreme levels for much of the year, especially in the Andes mountain range and the highlands. Intense and continuous exposure is associated with sunburn, increased risk of skin cancer and eye problems such as cataracts, pterygium, photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Despite these risks, many people living in poverty, especially in rural or high-radiation areas, do not have UV-protective sunglasses or clear information on how to protect themselves from the sun, making them more vulnerable to these cumulative damages.<\/span><\/p>\n
